Meet the Coaches

We are a team of dedicated and enthusiastic runners eager to share our knowledge and experience to help you achieve your goals. Eliminate the stress and monotony of unsupported training and allow us to take care of all the details for you, while providing the added accountability and motivation you need to succeed.

Andy Horton

Andy took up running a little later in life and gradually developed an infectious passion for every aspect of the sport, the side effects of which have been weight stabilization, increased feelings of euphoria, fun social activities and many valued friendships.

From uplifting group runs to the camaraderie and excitement of race day, setting and striving for goals with like-minded friends has been a thoroughly enriching experience. So much so that, along with Marlene, he founded Newmarket Road Runners in 2016 as a way of bringing the joy of running to the community as well as taking existing runners to new levels of excellence.

A veteran of some 20 marathons, two of which at Boston, and countless other races with a good share of unbridled disasters, Andy is well qualified as a life–changing guide whether it’s from the couch to your first 5k or as an engaging coach towards a shiny new PB!

Andy is in the final stages of completing his North American Academy for Sport Fitness Professionals (NAASFP) Marathon Running Coach certification to complement his vast running experience.

Marlene Sykes

Marlene first pursued running as a means to lose weight in 2007 and hasn’t looked back since completing her first race.

She quickly learned that the joy and satisfaction gained through this sport by far outweigh the benefit of shedding pounds.

Running has afforded Marlene some of her most memorable moments, rewarding experiences and cherished friendships, and she will quickly share you that it has changed her life for the better. From a 4:42 debut marathon to a 3:34 personal best and over 100 other road races along the way, she continues to chase the thrill of the next finish line.

Equal parts solo runner and social runner, she will rarely turn down the opportunity to lace up and hopes to continue sharing this enthusiasm with the local community. The only thing Marlene enjoys more than chasing after her won goals is helping others achieve theirs.

Her leadership experience, enthusiasm and engaging spirit make Marlene an asset to our coaching team.
